Mother’s Day Eve
Last night I lay at the foot of your bed
Listening to your breaths and sighs
The grinding of your brother’s teeth
Staccato beats just like my mother’s
Feeling your flutters and kicks
Outside my unguarded abdomen
My helpless arms humbled
Your wails had cut every wall
Terror echoing from room to room
Piercing dream to lucid screams
Time turned black as I raced each maze
Before the door swung open I saw you
Blinded by tears in the darkness
Alone in your own home
What monsters pull you from your rest
What memories drive you from your bed
Who would the answers comfort
When they lead to more unknown
Yet here I lay before I can sleep
My guesses are my guilt to keep
If my eyes close before you wake
Then by your side could I always stay
